We seek to ‘stand in the presence of God,’ as the Angel did, sent with good news to a waiting and suffering people at the beginning of the story of Christmas and its message of hope.

The Inspiration for our Community is Luke 1:19:
‘I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news…’

We are a small, dispersed Community of Vowed Anglican Women with the common purpose of seeking through prayer and action to make a difference.

Oversight

Our dispersed Community, formerly known as ‘The Order of the Sisters of Jesus’, was recognised as an ‘Acknowledged Community’ in July 2011 by the Advisory Council on the Religious Life, which regularises and advises the House of Bishops of the Anglican Church on matters related to the life of Religious Communities. This recognition came after a probationary period of ten years.

We are answerable to the structures in the UK province of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Our Bishop Visitor is the Right Reverend Peter Eagles, Bishop of Sodor and Man.

This Community, now under the new name of ‘The Gabriel Sisters’ was formally re-acknowledged by the Advisory Council for the Religious Life in November 2022, along with every other Community, both authorised and acknowledged, in the Anglican Church. 

Our Community is open to women from other Christian traditions, but is Anglican in its overall formation, with strong links to the Ignatian tradition. It draws on that and other tried and tested patterns of spirituality for its formation.

Location

The Community is largely based in the North West of England but there is no limitation as to where Sisters may live.
