A brief history of the Gabriel Sisters

Our dispersed Community, formerly known as ‘The Order of the Sisters of Jesus,’ was recognised as an Acknowledged Community in July 2011 by the Advisory Council for Religious Communities, which regularises and advises the House of Bishops of the Anglican Church on matters relating to the life of religious communities. This recognition came after a probationary period of ten years.

We are answerable to the structures in the UK province of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Our Bishop Visitor is the Right Reverend Peter Eagles, Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Norwich.

Our Community, now under the new name of ‘The Gabriel Sisters,’ was formally re- acknowledged by the Advisory Council in November 2022, along with every other Community, both recognised and acknowledged, in the Anglican church.

Our Community is open to women from other Christian denominations, but it is Anglican in its overall formation, with strong links to Ignatian spirituality.
